A unique lecture in which we invite prof. dr. Mattias Desmet to speak about how he sees the underlying dynamics of our current fear-based society, and the importance of making our own voice heard in this. In the second part, he goes deeper into how we can create true change through a conversation with Dirk Oellibrandt.
Mattias Desmet is professor of clinical psychology at Ghent University, wrote the bestseller “The Psychology of Totalitarianism” and has unyieldingly raised his critical voice since the start of the Corona Crisis. His message was always to look at the entire crisis from a human perspective, from an overall picture of man and society. Despite the many criticisms he received, he has always continued to speak frankly, with dignity and respect. His speaking comes from a deeper place, which also touched us. Or how he clearly describes it:
“The bold speech is a speech that goes against the languishing unity, but above all it is also a speech that starts from our soul, as it vibrates in our body. Letting the words come as they come, in the now, without concern for the shadows of the past they may bring to life, nor the effect they may have on our Ego's future. Speaking boldly is a speaking that sounds where we can free ourselves from our Ego and transcend our rational thinking. Real speaking - as well as real listening - is intuitive and feeling in nature.
This is where this speaking leads: it goes in, it goes without much thought straight to the unknown land from which the thoughts come; also to the darkest side of ourselves. For me, there lies the ultimate challenge for man, that is the ultimate struggle. It is there that words take on their full force and become unstoppable; the more society wants to suppress those words, the clearer and purer they sound.”
In the first part of the lecture, Mattias shares his vision of the times in which we live. Topics that will be covered:
the false solution of mass formation and totalitarianism
the danger of purely rationalistic thinking
the cause of our culture of fear
How did modern society take shape?
the importance of speaking freely
In the second part, Mattias talks to Dirk. Dirk gives his reflection on Mattias' lecture, from his perspective as a life alchemist. After which they will elaborate on:
how to live meaningful and contribute in this time
social change from within
the impact of the individual in the formation of the new world
the importance of true leadership.
